Welcome to the Road To Carry Newsletter—a weekly newsletter written to demystify private equity.

About me

I’m Edwin, a former VP in private equity who loves learning about different businesses and their growth strategies.

As a second-gen Korean immigrant who came to the U.S. as a teenager, my journey into private equity was accidental. Like many other immigrants, my dad’s been a small business owner, and his influence has led me to grow a general interest in business and investing. It wasn’t until my sophomore year in college that I stumbled upon private equity for a summer internship. And it was exciting—the high-stakes money involved, the decision making process, and access to executives who were much more experienced than anyone I had met before.

So, I took the well-trodden path to private equity. I started my career at Barclays and recruited to land an associate role at Providence Equity. I spent nearly a decade in IB/PE before leaving my last job as a VP at Tailwind Capital.

After years of recruiting, training, and mentoring junior talent, I started this newsletter to help others get up the curve faster than I did.

Mission

According to Harvard Business School, private equity controls ~20% of the U.S. economy (and growing). And yet, private equity is a black box for most people. The goal for this newsletter is to (i) demystify private equity for the readers by (ii) sharing what I learn and find interesting.

Why Subscribe?

First, the newsletter is free for subscribers and is sent every Saturday morning. Second, I use real-life examples of private equity investments and try to write about it in a way that’s digestible for readers of all levels—I hope it can be the newsletter that I wish I had during my early years in finance.

What’s next?

The newsletter is part of a broader platform I’m building—Road To Carry—which will include courses, videos, and tools to help young professionals become better investors, faster.

Hope you’ll follow along!
